Was there any possibility that the Lusitania was carrying any war supplies? And, as this was a war, how come the cry of outrage at the Germans actually doing what they said, meaning that they would sink all ships heading to Britian. Sounds like British war propaganda fed the fire of WWI, this was an "economic" war, not moral or other justification. So, in the Zimmerman document, do we have British propangda at work perhaps again? Trying to recall my high school history class of some decades ago, when this was required study. I should add, I grew up in one of those areas of the U.S. with a huge German population. There were alot of areas of our country with huge German populations; was there any thought of the U.S. supporting Germany over Britian?

The idea that \Pennsylvania miners\ dug the tunnel is misleading. The Federal regiment responsible for digging the gallery is the 48th Penn Veteran Volunteer Infantry. A written history of the unit makes a point of saying that this WASN'T a regiment of coal miners. In fact, on 25 June 1864, the day the digging began, only 78 of the regiment's 400+ plus men had such experience. More key to the situation was the chief engineer of the project; Lt. Col. Henry Pleasants. COl. Pleasants was a mining engineer prior to the war.

Scott was born on June 13, 1786, which means that at the start of the Civil War he was just shy of seventy-five years old. Our complete entry on Scott can be found here:

This is a good overview. Some of Mahone's Virginians that counterattacked were from Petersburg. They literally were fighting for their homes that day.
