About Virginia Vignettes
Virginia Vignettes is a brief weekly column which concisely presents a question from Virginia history along with an interpretative answer by a noted historian or scholar of Virginia.
Virginia Vignettes is brought to you by the Encyclopedia Virginia (EV). The EV will be a comprehensive compendium of Virginia history and culture and will serve as the first point of reference for information on Virginia.
The EV is a project of the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities whose mission is to develop the civic, cultural, and intellectual life of the Commonwealth by creating learning opportunities for all Virginians.
Our purpose is to bring the humanities fully into Virginia’s public life, assisting individuals and communities in their efforts to understand the past, confront important issues in the present, and shape a promising future.
